commonest cause is degeneration in the ligaments surrounding the spinal column which support the vertebrae and aid containment of the discs between the vertebral bodies. This is usually wear and tear degeneration. Herniation usually occurs acutely with bending stress to the spine, with the disc herniating past the ligaments posteriorly into the canal, impinging on the spinal cord and causing symptoms.

A lot of people say different things about how you can herniate a disc. I believe I herniated my disk by giving birth to my son. I was tiny tiny at 18 yrs old and my whole pregnancy I was all belly. I chose to have the epidural and I honestly believe that because opted for that and couldn’t feel ANYTHING from the waist down I caused way too much strain on my back. I had the most awful pain for a 1 1/2 and finally went in and discovered how serious it was and fortunately I was able to have surgery and I am good as new. I think people can herniate a disk in a lot of different ways its very serious once it happens, so be careful with your body.
